When is it Okay to Slash My Coverage For Better Auto Insurance Rates?

How Do I Choose Comprehensive Coverage?

Would you say it’s a good idea to be out driving on the roads with no auto insurance? No, probably not. Let’s face it, people drive like maniacs these days! The last thing you want is to be out on the highways completely unprotected, and yet thanks to the current cramp in our economy that’s exactly what hundreds of drivers are doing every day. Studies suggest that by 2010 the number of uninsured drivers out on the highways could hit record highs.

The question is, what are you going to do about it?

Nobody should ever have to choose between putting food on the table and having adequate auto insurance coverage for their cars, but that’s exactly what’s happening all across the United States as unemployment continues to climb and foreclosures dominate the housing market-although granted, not as badly as they did just a few short years ago. All that aside, it’s vital that we find a way to bring auto insurance rates back down into the affordable cost range of the average driver.

And sometimes that means slashing through the fluff.

Don’t get us wrong, you want to be insured. The more padding you have between your bank account and potential disaster, the happier everybody’s going to be! That doesn’t mean you should have to put yourself in the poorhouse to do it. If your auto insurance premiums are just a little beyond your reach, here’s what you can do to bring your costs back down.

First and foremost, what are you paying for that you don’t need? Almost all of today’s auto insurance companies are operating on the assumption that more is more when it comes to your coverage. It keeps them ahead of the competition (who doesn’t want to feel like they’re getting more for their money?) but doesn’t do a whole lot to keep costs down. Things like emergency roadside assistance, extra medical coverage and rental insurance are nice to have in a pinch, but they aren’t necessities.

Coming up with the money for a tow truck is a lot easier than coming up with hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay someone’s medical bills because you were driving uninsured.

Once you’ve wiped all that out of your budget, let’s take a look at how high your coverage levels are. Most states have a minimum liability level they require you to have, and you absolutely, positively want to make sure you’ve got at least that much added in to your auto insurance policy. Most experts will tell you that just enough usually isn’t enough however. With trips to the ICU starting at $5,000 a day, $15,000 in bodily injury isn’t going to go very far. Raising your liability to $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident (with an accompanying $100,000 in property damage liability just for good measure, since you never know when you’re going to hit a $70,000 Mercedes instead of a $5,000 clunker) shouldn’t do too much damage to your auto insurance rates and will go a long way toward making sure you’re protected when you’re out on the highway.

With liability taken care of, let’s take a look at your comprehensive and collision. If your budget absolutely, positively won’t stretch that far you can legally drive without them, but if you can afford them they’re nice to have. It’s cheaper to pay your auto insurance provider to replace your car than to try and do it yourself! The same goes for uninsured motorist insurance.

Remember, not everyone out there is as safe behind the wheel as you. It pays to have your bases covered.

In almost every state in the U.S. liability auto insurance is required. Here’s how to get low cost liability auto insurance with a reliable company.

What Does Liability Auto Insurance Cover?

Liability auto insurance provides two types of coverage:

* Bodily injury coverage, which pays for medical expenses if you cause an auto accident that injures someone.

* Property damage coverage, which pays to repair or replace the other person’s car and personal property if you cause an auto accident.

How Much Liability Coverage Do I Need?

The minimum requirements for liability auto insurance vary from state to state. To find out the requirements for your state, you can check your state’s department of insurance website or ask an insurance professional. When you go to find out the minimum requirements for liability auto insurance, you’ll be given three numbers. The first number is bodily injury limits for one person, the second number is bodily injury limits for all persons, and the third number is property damage limits. On Choosing the Ideal Auto Insurance Company

On Choosing the Ideal Auto Insurance Company

Locating the perfect auto insurance company is of prime importance. What you need for this is proper investment of time and energy in latching onto a company that extends the finest deals. The cost factor is surely a prime one determining your final selection of an auto insurance company. But, there are other equally important reasons too. They are namely, dependability and superior service.

Remember that during emergencies it is your automobile company that you will rely upon. Thus, it is imperative that you pick a company you can bank on to aid you when you are in dire straits.
Coming down to brass tacks, who is the finest judge of any automobile insurance company? Who can decide upon their quality? You are absolutely right… laymen like you. You see, insurance industry ratings are no doubt a significant way of picking up information about any auto insurance carrier. They can also furnish you with information on technical insight. But, to be fully educated on the subject, what you need is information on two factors. One – a hands-on evaluation of the supportive standards of a company! Especially when you the customer, are in need. And two, gleaning feedback from other customers of the company!

The former looks easy enough. This is because a majority of companies, whether into auto insurance or other products/services, are zealous to share with prospective customer’s positive feedback from current customers. Take a look at any auto insurance company’s website and you will come across positive and supportive testimonials. It is but natural that these companies are not willing to share their inadequacies with future clients. Clients who are keen on booking their insurance packages! In this case, before you sign on the dotted line, where do you go for a stable picture of the auto insurance company?

Simple, your state’s department of insurance website! Here, you get practical insights into automobile insurance companies. This is done by supplying details of consumer complaint ratios. How does this be of assistance? These ratios are a clear indication of the accurate complaints an auto insurance company has received for every 1000 claims filed. Thus, this information is enough to enlighten you about the pros and cons of a said company. You get to know about the quality of its service. This is revealed by listing the number of disgruntled customers who were frustrated enough to make an effort to register formal complaints.

Speaking personally to clients who have selected a specific auto insurance company, before you did, is a remote possibility. But yes, the service by our state department of insurance website, which lists this consumer complaint ratio service, is adequate. Here you can acquire a better impartial view of an insurance website. Actually, this is more authentic than the information a company displays at its own website. Thus, there is no one better to advise you on car insurance than other consumers. This is because the customer is king. Right!

The customer is the real expert on what makes an auto insurance company tick! And of course, which one you should keep at arm’s length.

Auto Insurance Shopping: What You Need to Know

Auto Insurance Shopping: What You Need to Know

Shopping for auto insurance is something we all eagerly anticipate, right? We just love surfing online for the best rates, and asking our friends and family for their auto insurance recommendations.

If you’re thinking, “You’re crazy!” you’re not alone.

We all know we need the protection auto insurance provides in case of an accident; but shopping for the right company with the right policy at the right price can take an investment of time and energy we’re just not sure we’re ready to expend.

After all, we work hard enough already, right?

But most people don’t know that shopping for car insurance doesn’t have to take a lot of time or effort. With a little reading and education on the subject in general, you can actually find great coverage at a minimal price–and have money left over for other things.

Besides, knowledge is power!

So, what should you know before jumping online or picking up the phone to ask for car insurance quotes?

Here it is, in a nutshell:

  1. Your auto insurance premiums are determined mainly by ratings. Insurance companies rate you according to the amount of claims risk you present, and then group you with others like you who have similar risk rates. Such factors as age and gender, where you live, your driving record, your marital status, prior insurance coverage, the number of miles you drive yearly, and your vehicle’s make and model all come into play when determining ratings.
  2. Discounts can dramatically lower car insurance rates. Rewarded to those considered low risk by their auto insurance companies, discounts are available for insuring multiple vehicles, taking driver education courses, being a good student, installing safety or anti-theft devices, being a good driver, low-mileage driving and purchasing more than one policy type with the same insurer.
  3. Auto insurance requirements are set by each state individually. Depending on whether your state is a tort or a no-fault state, the type and amount of car insurance coverage required by law varies. Check with your state insurance department to find out which system your state operates under and the legal limits you must carry on auto insurance.
  4. It’s wise to consider optional coverage. It makes sense to purchase collision and comprehensive coverage on your car, unless you drive an older vehicle. Collision covers damage to your car when it impacts another car or fixed object. Comprehensive pays for auto damage from almost all other causes, including fire, weather, vandalism, floods and theft.
  5. If you drive an older car, the claims you file under these circumstances may cost your auto insurance company more than your car is worth–which makes purchasing collision and comprehensive an ill-advised move.

  6. Protect yourself at all costs. Don’t even sign an application for car insurance until you contact your state’s department of insurance to make sure any companies you’re considering purchasing from are licensed in your state! It’s illegal for unlicensed insurers to sell insurance–and you may get stuck without coverage if you fail to check them out first.
  7. Once you’ve purchased an auto insurance policy, remember it is a legal contract. So read it carefully, make sure you understand the rights and responsibilities it spells out, and ask questions about anything you don’t understand. Both your insurance agent and your state department of insurance are valuable resources for information.

  8. Do your research before making your final decision. There are a number of unbiased resources at your disposal, so take advantage of them before you sign on the dotted line. You can find auto insurance information at your local library, in articles online, from consumer groups, through auto insurance publications and, of course, from your state’s department of insurance.

Don’t let the shopping process drag you down when it comes to auto insurance. Read up on the subject, get a grasp on the relevant issues, and move forward with confidence.

You’ll save yourself time and money–so you can move on to more important things!

Explore Ways of Obtaining Discount Auto Insurance

Explore Ways of Obtaining Discount Auto Insurance

Exploring the many ways you can get discount auto insurance may take a bit of time, but it will be worth it in the amount of money that you save.

You won’t be stuck with paying high rates for auto insurance year after year when you look for ways to save money. Discount auto insurance is available when you know what to look for. Take a look at your renewal statement for your auto insurance to see how much money you are paying for the various types of coverage.

One of the things you should check is the amount of deductible on your policy. This refers to the amount of money that you would have to pay to have repairs done to your vehicle or the vehicle of another driver if you are at fault in an accident. The lower that this deductible is, the higher your insurance premiums will be. Choosing a higher amount of deductible will give you a discount on your auto insurance.

Even though the base cost of the policy doesn’t change, you can save money by paying the auto insurance in one lump sum when it is time to renew. When you pay out your insurance monthly, you pay additional costs in financing charges, which are often quite high. By eliminating these charges, you are in effect getting a discount compared to the total you paid in previous years. You can save a little each month so that you have the money available on the renewal date or you can put away your income tax refund to make the insurance payment.

Ask your insurance agent if the company provides any discounts for age and safe driving records. If you do have a safe driving record, then you are in the prime position for receiving cheap auto insurance. This is one of the main factors used in determining the cost of your insurance premiums. If you have a record of several accidents, then the insurance provider sees you as a bad risk and will charge you a higher rate.

Teenage drivers who do have a good academic record are seen as responsible individuals may receive a discount. Many insurance providers provide a discount when you add your teenage son or daughter to your policy when they demonstrate that they have a grade of “B” or higher in their high school subjects. If teenagers take driving lessons from driving schools, this also qualifies for a discount on insurance. Even if you have a record of being at fault in several accidents and enhance your driving skills by taking such courses, you can also qualify for a lower rate.

The longer you have been driving affects the amount of money you have to pay for your annual policy. Those who have not been driving very long will pay a higher rate and those who have not had auto insurance in their own name will also be charged more. When you first start driving, it is helpful if your name is added to a policy so that you do have a record of having had insurance. This will make it easier for you to get discounts in the future when you purchase a vehicle.

With the many insurance providers that have an online presence, it is easier than ever before to save money with discount auto insurance simply by searching online. You can browse the sites of these providers to find out their rates and the various types of policies that they offer. By requesting free quotes from several providers, you can then take your time to compare the prices and terms to find a policy that best suits your needs.

Auto Insurance Subrogation

Auto Insurance Subrogation

What exactly is auto insurance subrogation? As an auto insurance policyholder, if you are ever in an accident where you have received extensive injuries and car damage because of an uninsured driver, (with the proper coverage) you can contact your auto insurance company and they will pay for your expenses related to the accident. But what happens if some time later your insurance company discovers that the motorist at fault has insurance to cover your personal injuries and damage to your vehicle? Your insurance company may decide to seek reimbursement from the at fault motorist’s auto insurance company. This process is known as subrogation.

How Does Subrogation Work?

Subrogation is a process that occurs when an insurance company goes after reimbursement for the person or company legally responsible for an accident. Subrogation takes place after the innocent driver’s insurance company has already paid for their policyholder’s personal injuries and/or vehicle damage. The rule in this situation is that after paying your claim, your auto insurance company has the right to represent you and sue the negligent party for you. Not all insurers will bother to subrogate more insurance bills. This could cause a conflict of interest and be against the driver’s insurance coverage, or your medical insurance already covering your treatment.

Many people involved in auto accidents decide to use their own health insurance to cover their medical bills – even if they have medical payments coverage through their auto insurance provider. You need to review your policy to see whether one form of coverage is considered primary over the other. You should also find out how your policy handles double coverage. Some companies will prefer to pay you directly for your bills, even if they have already been paid by your health insurance company. That money is yours to keep. Your auto insurance policy will only take care of bills resulting from a reasonable, necessary treatment that stays within the cost limits of your policy.

Subrogation can be used when your auto insurance company settles your collision claim because of the other motorist. When this happens, your insurance company will ask you to sign a subrogation release form stating your right to recovery against the person who caused your injury and damage. Subrogation usually takes place after the original claim is settled.

What if You Are At Fault in an Accident?

If you are the driver at fault in the accident, you may only be held responsible for your part of the damages according to the laws in your state. In this case, the other driver’s insurance company will subrogate against you or your auto insurance company to pay for any personal injuries or car damage that the other party sustained. In some cases you may be able to negotiate the amount of damages an auto insurance company is claiming, or even ask that they be spread out over time. If you are involved in an accident while uninsured and a claim is subrogated against you, the best thing to do is consider consulting with an experienced car accident lawyer to make sure you are not taken advantage of. During the subrogation process the best thing you can do is be patient and stay in contact with your claims specialist while everything is being worked out.

Getting Started With an Auto Insurance Policy

Auto Insurance Evergreen Park, Dekalb, Oak Lawn, Aurora, Po

Auto insurance policy provides extensive coverage for you, your vehicle and third party depending upon the type of insurance policy you have chosen. You have to pay a certain amount as premium and the insurance company pays you for the damage or loss which has been sustained by your car. Car insurance is expensive but also the best way to be secure in time of crisis such as a theft or accident of your precious automobile. There are different types of auto insurance available:

1. Fully comprehensive auto insurance policy: As the name suggests, it is comprehensive because it covers you fully against all types of loss like theft, accident or other damages. You get 100% security with this type of insurance for your vehicle.
2. Third Party: It provides coverage for other person (third party) who has suffered damages by your car. It has to be your fault and is applicable if you own an old vehicle.
3. Third Party (Fire & Theft): This provides third party coverage against loss by fire and theft.
4. Specialized car insurance: This type of insurance is for the vehicles which are 25 years old and which require special services. But before you purchase this type of policies, you have to be sure about the source from which you are going to purchase this policy. You must decide your budget beforehand, as this type of policy is usually expensive.

After deciding your budget, you must select the type of coverage you want for your policy. Discuss your requirements and problems with these companies and choose the policy that is able to provide you with the coverage required by you.

It is important to know what coverage you have before you decide to file your claim and the best time to do this is usually when you get your renewal papers. Quite often, people find out after they have filed their claims, that they were not covered for something or that their deductible is higher than they thought.

Take time to find out the following parts of your insurance policy:

1. Policy declarations: This is the personalized part of your insurance that tells you all about who is covered by the insurance, what type of vehicle is covered, policy number, etc.
2. Coverage: It lists out the costs of each type of coverage and that for the specific insurance like body injury and comprehensive coverage. It also spells out how much your deductibles are.
3. Endorsements: These are changes which your insurance company makes in your policy. Read these endorsements very carefully as they may make changes in the wording and coverage. Read them at the initial stage when you get the insurance policy or at any time when you are holding the policy.
4. Exclusions: These are the factors that may make the insurance company reconsider its decisions of providing an auto insurance policy and may prompt the company to cancel the insurance.
5. Conditions: These are the stipulated points stating the requirements you and the insurance company need to fulfill to maintain the policy such as how you pay your premium or cancel an auto insurance policy.

Understanding your auto insurance policy is very crucial for proper use of the policy in time of need.

Shopping For Auto Insurance Quotes Online Can Remind You Why Getting Older Really IS Getting Better

There’s a theory that every car has a sensor that detects the age of the person driving and automatically turns the left turn signal on for one minute for every year. Older drivers are rumored to be slower, make larger, more reckless turns, and generally be a nuisance on the road. Stereotypes stink- there are plenty of seniors who drive perfectly, and often have less accidents than anyone else on the road, period. Insurance companies recognize this, and most of these drivers can find great auto insurance quotes online thanks to a lifetime of clean driving.

In fact, there are a lot of auto insurance discounts available to the over 55 crowd, and if you or a loved one falls into this category, fight the bad press and get your insurance quotes online to find out which of the following can help save you big when you’re shopping for auto insurance quotes online:

Good Record Discount – Ticket free and claim free? You should be getting great, low rates!!

Group Discount – Membership in the American Association for Retired Persons and other groups or clubs can make you or your loved one eligible for some nice discounts with a variety of insurance companies.

Seniors-Only Defensive Driving Courses- Courses like these are available from private groups and a variety of cities and public agencies. These courses can help save 5% – 15% on auto insurance rates, and that’s usually on top of whatever other discounts you receive.

Low Mileage Discount – Insurance companies do this part in different ways (which is why it’s so important to get a variety of auto insurance quotes online), but many insurance companies offer a discount if you only drive locally-or very, very rarely.

Auto Safety and/or Depreciation- If your car is older and has gone down in value, it’s time to consider firing up the not-so-old computer and going hunting for auto insurance quotes online. By the same token, you might consider upgrading or trading in an older car- the discounts provided by modern safety features and lower gas mileage may help pay for or cover your down payment!

Are you already getting these discounts? Here’s the news: Even if you or a senior in your life already has all of these discounts, if the insurance policy hasn’t been examined within the last year, there’s still money to be saved. Go shopping for auto insurance quotes online. You might be surprised at what you find out.
